Zejtun Red Stars Veterans took command of the VMFA Hyundai Premier League table as they beat Malta Football Players Association 8-5 in yesterday’s top of the table clash.
MFPA started the night with a two-point advantage over the Red Stars, but Zejtun were determined to turn the tables and topple the leaders.
Zejtun started strongly and scored four times without reply through Noel Tabone (2), Gilbert Camilleri Lowell and Michael Borg Olivier.
Stephen Wellman reduced the arrears for MFPA, only for Camilleri Lowell to make it 5-1 for Zejtun and Jonathan Bondin again reducing the gap before half-time.
Camilleri Lowell scored his third early in the second half, with further goals by George Frendo and Nikolay Filipov putting the Red Stars 8-2 up.
MFPA’s attempted comeback came too late in the game, but Wellman’s second and third goal, and Bondin’s second of the night made the result more respectable.
Birkirkara Saint Helen Veterans FC produced a convincing victory as they beat Gzira United FC Veterans 10-1.
Claudio Calleja and Glenn Bonello each scored a hat-trick for Birkirkara, with Joseph Chetcuti, David Azzopardi, Trevor Cilia and Paul Bugeja adding to the tally.
Dino Cachia scored the Maroons’ only goal.
