Żurrieq Wolves Veterans secured an impressive 5-3 victory over Dutch side FC Abcoude in an international friendly played in Utrecht. The Maltese side showed great resilience, coming from behind on three occasions before sealing the match in the final minutes.

Alex Muscat was the star of the evening, netting a hat-trick, with assists from Kevin Vella and Jurgen Mifsud. Vella himself also found the net twice, with Mario Camilleri and Muscat providing the assists.

The Veterans Malta Football Association advanced to the next round of the Jubilee Cup, part of the MFA’s 125th anniversary celebrations, after a 3-1 victory over the Malta Amateur Football Association (MAFA).

Although MAFA opened the scoring early through Chijioke Moses Nwankwo in the 4th minute, the Veterans quickly took control of the match. Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza equalized in the 12th minute, with Thomas Paris and Andrew Cohen adding further goals in the 43rd and 59th minutes to secure the win.

Both sides had entered the match on the back of strong performances: MAFA had eliminated Masters Football and IASC, while the Veterans had previously beaten MESA and SWAN.

The game highlighted the Veterans’ experience and composure, allowing them to overcome a determined MAFA side and move forward in the competition.

The Malta Veterans National Team have written their name in the local football history books after setting two new national records during the Jubilee Cup 2025–26, organized by the Malta Football Association.

The records were officially recognized by The Malta Records and presented at the Charles Abela Stadium in Mosta. The achievements are:

1. The oldest team by average age to feature in an official MFA match.
2. The oldest team by average age to win an official MFA match.

Both records were established during the fixture played on Friday, 29 August 2025, at the Centenary Stadium, Ta’ Qali. The Veterans defeated M.E.S.A. 2–1 thanks to a brace from Jean Pierre Mifsud Triganza.

The Veterans overcame SWAN Selection 5–4 on penalties after a 2–2 draw in regular time. Ian Zammit had given the Veterans the lead after 15 minutes, and they went into half-time 1–0 up. However, SWAN’s forward Auwal Abba turned the match around with two goals between the 47th and 73rd minute. Manolito Micallef then equalised to send the match to penalties.

In the decisive shootout, Micallef, Justin Grioli, Andrew Cohen, Zammit and Frendo converted their spot-kicks for the Veterans. SWAN responded with goals from Abba, Gabriel Felipe, Darrell Baldacchino and Klajdi Qose, but Sean Lee Lanzon failed to convert his attempt, handing the victory to the Maltese side.

This competition is being organised by the Malta FA to mark its 125th anniversary.

In the first half, the Veterans dominated possession, while MESA tried to threaten with occasional counterattacks.

Despite the balance of play, it was MESA who broke the deadlock in the 75th minute through Jean Carlos Ibarra Grueso, who made a fine run into the box before beating goalkeeper Matthew Camilleri.

The Maltese Veterans produced an immediate response, equalizing four minutes later when Mifsud Triganza shook off his marker and slotted past Jurgen Cilia with a precise shot into the corner.

That goal spurred Joe Micallef’s team on, and Mifsud Triganza struck again to secure a dramatic winner. Following a corner action, he pounced on a loose ball and fired into an empty net to seal the victory.
